COUNTY OF MONTEREY AND SCRAMP ARE ON THE FAST TRACK FOR LAGUNA SECA RECREATION AREA IN 2018

The Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP), the management company for the Monterey County-owned Laguna Seca Recreation Area, is charging into 2018 with its foot on the pedal. The season, which gets underway April 19-22 with the Sea Otter Classic, is the most ambitious yet for the iconic race facility.

Ten major spectator events will occur this season and is squarely projected to surpass the $62.1 million economic impact that Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca contributed to the Monterey County economy in 2015. The study was conducted by California State University Monterey Bay’s College of Business. Not included in the survey were the 300-plus track rental days that provide further economic impact to hundreds of businesses in the County.

An integral element of the 2018 season is the facility improvement plan that began in early 2017. In the past 60 days alone the following activities have either been completed or are underway:

•    Drainage, erosion control and water management improvements
•    Water treatment services and drilling of a new well
•    Restrooms construction inside Newman building for all spectator events
•    Campground restroom and shower buildings
•    Red 9 parking re-paving
•    Lakebed parking paving
•    Go-Karting fencing and introduction of a corporate program
•    New mobile diner for greater service
•    New accounting and event management software programs
•    Top floor of Newman building reconstruction and upgrade
•    New camping website for heightened customer service
•    WiFi enhancements for greater robust connectivity
•    Management restructuring

In the coming months, and before the end of the 2018 major event season, SCRAMP and the County of Monterey will begin on the following:

•    New Start/Finish bridge
•    Communications systems park-wide and corner marshal stations
•    New fuel pumps
•    Architectural plans underway for permanent paddock buildings

“With the County’s oversight and encouragement, there has never been such intense progress and planning in infrastructure for this facility than what is occurring now,” commented Michael Smith, interim CEO of SCRAMP. “While much of it has been made to ‘unseen’ areas, track renters, series organizers and visitors will immediately begin seeing noticeable improvements in their overall experience. We are building for the future to ensure Laguna Seca prospers in Monterey County for generations to come.”
