There’s a new infographic showing where the Toyota 4Runner is most popular in the USA. When they were anticipating Toyota’s latest TRD Pro vehicle announcement, the team at Olathe Toyota Parts Center wondered just how popular Toyota’s 4Runner still is. The popularity of this SUV was determined on both a total volume and per capita basis. The team looked at a one year window, Jan. 2018 through Jan. 2019, to collect the information. Using analytics from the Parts.OlatheToyota.com website, they studied where people who look for Toyota 4Runner repair parts reside, then compared that data with US Census data to get the results.
“With all the crossovers available these days, we wanted to get a better picture of who is still enjoying Toyota’s truck-based SUV,” says Tom Blackman, director of Olathe Toyota Parts Center. “This vehicle has the truck authenticity you don’t get with the car-like utility crossovers that are so popular, and it gets bigger through the generations. So many SUVs are shrinking but not the 4Runner.”
Here are some highlights from the graphic:
- Hawaii ranked #1 as the state with the most 4Runners per capita.
- The first two states with the highest overall number of 4Runners were two of the biggest states, California and Texas. Of course, both states have plenty of trails and outdoor recreation areas.
- The 4Runner has some large numbers along the East Coast. New York, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia and Florida all made the list for the top 10 states with the most vehicles. Georgia, Virginia and North Carolina are also included in the per capita top 10 list.
- The District of Columbia may only have a population of 693,972, but it ranks second on the 4Runners per capita list.
“At first, the per capita numbers in Hawaii threw us. Are they using them to carry surfboards or tow jet skis?” asks Blackman. “We went to YouTube and found some 4Runners rock crawling in Oahu and running through sand on a Hawaiian beach. We considered those videos and the frequent rains and mud, and now the 4Runner’s popularity makes perfect sense.”
