A new graphic depicts popular cars from the Japan Domestic Market that can be imported to the US and may be a better value than some used Mazdas sold here. Inspired by the recent Japanese car display at the 3rd Annual Classic Auto Show and the ongoing interest in JDM cars, the team at REALMazdaParts.com decided to illustrate seven Japanese Mazda models that can be imported to the states. These seven Mazdas can often be had for a reasonable price, a shipping and delivery charge, and a resolve to steer from the right side of the cabin.
“Granted, it’s impossible to import an overseas Mazda that’s newer than 25 years old,” says Bob Cockerham, parts director of REALMazdaParts.com. “But even at 25, some of these Japanese Mazdas are well worth the price.”
Here are some fun facts about a few of the cars on the graphic:
- Mazda RX-7 – A Japanese pre-1996 version of this sports car with high mileage may very well have a rebuilt engine under the hood. The rotary engines are usually rebuilt or replaced at 100,000 kilometers, so an American may pay for a used, high-mileage vehicle that actually has a new engine.
- Eunos Cosmos – The Eunos brand is Mazda’s upscale line, and the Cosmos is a popular, premium model. The luxury vehicle was produced from 1967-1996. The 1967 Cosmos was introduced with a dual rotor Wankel engine that had 110 hp and 96 lb-ft of torque. A 1990 model even had an in-dash GPS system.
- Autozam AZ-1 – Autozam is another Mazda brand, and this gull-winged microcar is now a rare, uh, bird. Designed by Mazda, it was powered by a 660 cc Suzuki engine when it was introduced in 1992. Due to Japan’s recession, the production of this kei car was halted. Americans who want to import these should be of a petite build to truly enjoy the drive.
- Mazda Titan – In the US, we’re familiar with a personal truck named Titan and built by Nissan. Overseas, Mazda used the name for their popular, fuel-efficient commercial truck. It’s been around since 1971 and comes in several variants, including the Titan Dump.
“There are actually some Mazda models that can be imported that might be a better value than similar models we already have,” says Cockerham. “For example, you can import an Eunos Roadster from Japan that has really low miles for about the same price as a Miata with higher mileage in the US. But you’d be that much cooler driving the right hand drive Roadster around.”
