TESLA MODEL 3 PERFORMANCE’S 0-60 TIME BEATS BMW M3 BUT WOULD IT WIN ON AT THE TRACK?

A new comparison chart reveals how the 2019 Tesla Model 3 Performance matches up against the latest BMW M3 in price, power and other specs. Inspired by the similar design of the two performance sedans, the team at EuroSport Tuning compared the two base vehicles. Despite being substantially different from a powertrain perspective, they are extremely similar from a design perspective.

“This Tesla Model 3’s design was absolutely influenced by the M3,” says Frank Derks, director at EuroSport Tuning. “The M3 is the performer all others must match. Due to its electric motor, the Tesla is slightly quicker than the BMW in terms of zero to 60 and quarter-mile times. The true contest would be on the track because the M3 has balanced handling, is lighter, and doesn’t have a battery pack that’s in danger of overheating.”

Here are some highlights from the comparison chart:

  • The Tesla Model 3 out accelerates the BMW M3 in the 0-60, and even completes the 1/4 mile a couple of tenths of a second quicker.
  • Despite having similar wheelbases, lengths and widths, the Model 3 Performance carries an additional 457 pounds in curb weight.
  • The base model Tesla Model 3 Performance has an MSRP about $2500 less than the BMW M3. The Tesla buyer most likely will receive federal and state tax credits, further reducing the price.

“I’ll admit the Model 3 Performance is great competition and will probably make BMW up their game,” says Derks. “There’s been a lot of talk about adding hybrid and electric vehicles to BMW’s M line. Who knows? That’s great if they can do it but all most of us want is an M3 that feels like an M3, no matter what’s actually under the hood.”
