Chicago Bear legend and NFL Hall-of-Famer Walter Payton’s 1979 Porsche 930 Turbo (Lot S134) and four 1955 American gems from The McDonald’s Classics Collection headline the estimated 1,000 classic and collector cars consigned for auction at Mecum Chicago 2018 to take place this Oct. 25-27 at the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center in Schaumburg, Illinois.
Mecum Auctions, the world’s largest collector-car auction company, will host Chicagoland’s only annual collector-car auction featuring American muscle cars, classics, Corvettes, Hot Rods, Resto Mods and more. Special offers on auction admission and bidder registration will be available on Friday, Oct. 26 to attendees sporting Illinois State University or Chicago Blackhawks apparel.
Purchased new and cared for by Walter Payton until his death in 1999, the ’79 Porsche is one of 1,200 Porsche 930 Turbos produced for the U.S. Market in 1979. It sports a silver exterior and black leather interior with a turbocharged 3.3L/265 HP 6-cylinder engine and with just 9,950 miles since new. The car was bequeathed to his son, Jarrett Payton, from his father’s estate and has been owned and cared for by Jarrett ever since.
The McDonald’s Classics Collection is composed of four period-correct, collector-grade automobiles that were all built the same year that Ray Kroc opened his first McDonald’s. Their abundant chrome work and glistening two-tone paint schemes were displayed at McDonald’s Store No. 1 in Des Plaines, Ill., for decades. The four cars—including 1955 models of the Chevrolet Bel Air (Lot S101), Chrysler New Yorker St. Regis (Lot S102),Oldsmobile Delta 88 (Lot S103) and the Ford Crown Victoria (Lot S104)—will cross the auction block at no reserve on Saturday, Oct. 27.
The Petros Collection at No Reserve consists of 34 vehicles dating from a 1928 Chevrolet Capitol Half-Ton Pickup (Lot F199) and a 1931 Ford Model A Sport Coupe (Lot F199.1) to a 1999 Harley-Davidson Flhtcui Road King (Lot F220) and a 2006 Lincoln Town Car Signature (Lot F222). The diverse collection further encompasses a 1966 Ford Mustang Convertible (Lot F221), a stunning pink and charcoal 1956 DeSoto Fireflite (Lot F206) and several Thunderbirds including models from 1955 and 1957.
The 59-lot consignment from The Tom Jellison Collection will also be offered at no reserve and will include offerings that run the gamut from early 20th-century runabouts, speedsters, Street Rods and Hot Rods to ‘60s muscle, prewar classics, race cars and modern masterpieces.
The Mountain Estate Collection of nine lots includes a 1917 Ford Model T Runabout (Lot F109), a pair of 1929 Ford Model As (Lots F106 and F108), and a 1943 Bren Universal Carrier (Lot F103), all offered at no reserve. The Dan Houpt Collection, also offered at no reserve, includes four Mopar muscle cars: a 1970 Plymouth Duster (Lot F153), 1971 Dodge Demon (Lot F154), 1971 Dodge Challenger R/T (Lot F155) and a 1971 Plymouth Cuda (Lot F156).
Another collection consigned at no reserve is The Hot Rod Collection that consists of 17 lots including a 1940 Ford Deluxe Coupe (Lot F7), a 1936 Ford Sedan Street Rod (Lot F9) and a 1937 Ford Pickup Rat Rod (Lot F16), to name a few.
Mecum Chicago 2018 is open to buyers, sellers and spectators. Bidder registration is available online in advance for $100, $200 after auction start, and includes admission for two to the three auction days. General admission tickets are available in advance online for $20 per person, per day, and for $30 at the door and online once the auction begins; children 12 and younger receive complimentary admission. On Friday, Oct. 26, attendees that come wearing Illinois State University or Chicago Blackhawks apparel will be eligible for $10 admission or $100 on-site bidder registration.
Doors open daily at 8 a.m., with the vehicle auction beginning at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25 and at 10 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 26-27. Mecum Chicago 2018 will be broadcast on NBC Sports Network a total of 18.5 hours, including 10.5 hours of live coverage. A live stream of the entire auction will be presented at Mecum.com.
