The leading Spanish-language automotive radio show, Ruedas ESPN, named the 2019 Veloster N best compact car and the 2019 Kona EV best electric car during the 2018 Miami International Auto Show. Ruedas ESPN’sexecutive committee was responsible for generating the nominations and their industry expert group of jurors selected the winners.
“Veloster N and Kona EV are examples of Hyundai’s high performance and technological-based leadership capabilities. Receiving these awards is a testament that our dedication, enthusiasm and growth in new segments is working,” said Mike O’Brien, vice president of Product, Corporate and Digital Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “From creating an affordable sports car with thrilling dynamics to an efficient small CUV with a generous 258-mile range, Hyundai’s value commitment remains strong.”
Jaime Florez, director and host of Ruedas ESPN, added “Hyundai continues to deliver an appealing combination of bold and stylish design, performance, comfort, functionality and standardized advanced safety technologies. This year, Hyundai’s technological achievements in both the electrification of vehicles and growth in the high-performance segment, while remaining true to their core of abundant value and affordability, make the all-new 2019 Kona EV and Veloster N the best vehicles in their categories.”
The Veloster N offers a larger 2.0-liter, direct-injected turbocharged powerplant over the Veloster Turbo. The engine boasts up to an available 275 horsepower at 6,000 rpm (estimated) and up to 260 lb.-ft. of torque from 1,450-4,700 rpm (estimated) for responsive, thrilling performance at every RPM range. The turbo system intercooler is isolated from the condenser and radiator for even more efficient cooling of the intake charge. The system also benefits from a two-stage induction system for maximum output at all rpm ranges.
The Kona Electric powertrain employs a high-efficiency 150 kW (201 horsepower) permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor supplied by a high-voltage 64 kWh lithium-ion battery. The motor develops 291 lb.-ft. of torque distributed to the front wheels. The powertrain inverter has a power density of 25.4 kVA per liter. The battery system is liquid-cooled and operates at 356 volts. Battery pack energy density is 141.3 Wh/kg (greater than Chevy Bolt), with a total battery system weight under 1,000 lbs. In addition, Kona Electric EPA-estimated MPGe is 132 city, 108 highway, and 120 combined with an estimated 258-mile range.
