A new infographic compares two 2018 NASCAR machines: the NASCAR Cup Series Camaro ZL1 against the NASCAR Truck Series Silverado. Since NASCAR is running a Chevy Camaro ZL1 for the first time in this year’s Monster Energy Cup Series, the team at GMPartsCenter.net decided to see how this high-level performance car stacks up against a Silverado that’s built to run. GMPartsCenter.net put together this race-themed comparison chart to share with enthusiasts.
“Austin Dillion won the Daytona 500 with this new Camaro. At this time, Jimmie Johnson is driving this brand new Camaro ZL1 and is running 12th in the cup series,” says Matt Mylan, director of GMPartsCenter.net. “He seems to be in a slump, and I think his confidence is shaken. It’s too bad because this car is a heck of a machine and ready to win.”
Johnny Sauter is driving the #21 ISM Connect Silverado in the 2018 NASCAR Camping World Truck series and has secured three wins this season, including Charlotte.
“Sauter drove a Camaro in Dover and did okay. Some drivers work their way up to the NASCAR car races via the truck series,” Mylan says. “The truck series don’t get as much love, so we decided to take a look at the differences in the actual vehicles to see how these Chevy racing trucks compare to the cars.”
Here are some highlights from the infographic:
- The engine on the ZL1 is a naturally aspirated 358-ci V8 that works with electronic fuel injection, but the Silverado’s naturally aspirated 366-ci V8 has a carburetor. Both run a 4-speed, manual transmission.
- The ZL1 puts out 725-850 horsepower, and the horsepower range varies with track requirements. Adjustments are made with tapered spacers and intake restrictors. The NASCAR truck’s range is less, 650-700 horsepower.
- The truck also has slightly less torque. The Silverado has 520 pound-feet while the Camaro has 530 pound-feet.
- The Camaro has a minimum weight requirement of 3300 pounds, which is only 100 less than the Silverado’s requirement. The cars and trucks are made of steel tube frames with roll cages, lightweight bodies, and specific aerodynamic features. For each vehicle, about 200 pounds of the weight can be attributed to the tires.
The truth is the two vehicles aren’t much different from one another. NASCAR has been around since 1948, but NASCAR Truck Racing wasn’t even an idea until the 1980s, and the Truck Cup Series wasn’t started until 1995. Maybe the truck series will grow in popularity, and the Chevy trucks will continue grow in power and performance.
