A common issue on the MD05 transmission is the 3 rubber shift rail plugs shrink over time and allow fluid to leak out while you’re driving. The easiest way to fix this is to go in from the top as Ford was nice enough to give an access plate around the shifter.
First, remove both the driver and passenger side rails that hold the carpet down. You may also need to remove the side panels in the top right of the photo to get the carpet to slide out.
If your shifter is loose, now would be a good time to replace the shifter bushings too. You can get the repair kit from most any auto parts store but the cheapest I found it was at rockauto.com for $12. Make sure the transmission is in NEUTRAL before removing the shifter!
Next remove the shifter and roll the carpet up to reveal the access plate.
Remove the 4 fasteners and take to access plate off.
Clean the area thoroughly so no dirt will get into the transmission. Pull the 3 plugs out with a screwdriver or needlenose pliers. Now you have 2 options for replacement. You can run a bead of rtv silicone around the plugs and reinstall them or you can buy metal freeze plugs and drive them in.
I rtv’d mine. Just reinstall everything in reverse order and problem solved!
