DODGE AND PLYMOUTH WINGS TAKE FLIGHT AT MECUM KISSIMMEE 2017

Lovers of Mopar Wing Cars will be in seventh heaven at Mecum Kissimmee 2017 as nine Plymouth Superbirds will be joined by a lone Dodge Hemi Daytona at the world’s largest collector-car auction, where more than 3,000 classic and collector cars are scheduled to cross the block this Jan. 6-15, at the Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee, Florida.

As the 1960s were coming to a close, things were not looking good in stock-car racing for the Mopar twins: Dodge and Plymouth. Ford had the upper hand and something drastic needed to be done. A rapid commitment was made to creating an aerodynamically functional bodywork legal for the regulations at the time. The result were the Wing Cars—whose success on the track still resonates all these years later—the likes of which were never seen before or since.

Hailing from the Tom Lembeck Collection are the lone Hemi Daytona (Lot F167), one of only two built in Spring Green, and a Hemi Superbird (Lot F191) that recently underwent a comprehensive restoration to original specs completed in November 2016 at Nicolay Auto Body in Lodi, Wisconsin. These winged warriors are expected to be among the most significant cars to be offered at the auction. Two stunning unrestored Hemi Superbirds add to the precious metal at the auction, the first originating from the Colts Neck Collection (Lot F157), with the second sporting a mere 9,809 original miles (Lot S97). Rounding out the wing cars on offer are six Superbirds with 440 cubic-inch V-8 engines (Lots L84, L92, S107, S161, S179, T145.1), making for a truly breathtaking offering.

The Kissimmee 2017 auction is open to sellers, buyers and spectators. Bidder registration is $100 when completed online in advance, or $200 after auction start; registration includes admission for the bidder and a guest for all 10 auction days. General admission tickets are available in advance for $20 per person, per day, or at the gate for $30; 10-day auction passes are available for $200, and children 12 and younger receive complimentary admission.
