The longstanding wagon champion, the Subaru Outback, faces its latest competitor, the Buick Regal TourX, in a new comparison chart. SubaruPartsPlus.com decided to break down the specs on each base vehicle to see which comes out on top. The infographic reveals a few stark contrasts between the two vehicles. Can the Buick Regal TourX appeal to those who appreciate the Outlook’s reputation for off-road capability?
“I’ve got to hand it to Buick,” says Steve Ferreira, parts director at SubaruPartsPlus.com. “They’ve been innovating and reinventing their brand pretty well for a couple of years, but I just don’t think this Regal wagon can match the ruggedness and efficiency of an Outback. The utility wagon territory might be too unfamiliar. The Buick has a luxurious interior and some other attributes that make it seem like just a city car.”
City drivers often look for fuel efficiency, and the Regal TourX not only prefers premium fuel to regular but gets three miles less per gallon in the city versus the Outback. Wherever this first generation Buick may go, it does so with more power under the hood than the Outback. Both the 2018 Subaru Outback’s horsepower and torque are considerably less than the Buick’s output. Here are some of the performance specs highlighted on the chart:
- The 2018 Buick Regal TourX has a 2.0L, I4 turbo engine. It delivers 250 hp @ 5500 rpm, 295 lb-ft of torque, getting the car from zero to 60 in 6.3 seconds.
- The 2018 Subaru Outback has a 2.5-liter, flat-four engine that delivers 175 hp @5800 rpm and 174 lb-ft of torque. It takes 3.1 seconds longer to than the Buick to get from zero to 60.
- Subaru’s retuned-for-2018 CVT transmission is said to have a smooth response and prevent a loss in momentum while driving the Outback.
- The Buick’s 8-speed automatic transmission can be manually shifted, but has no paddle shifters.
The Buick is fast but can it take on snow or dirt roads? While not built for hardcore rock crawling, the Subaru Outback has spent its long lifetime proving it can easily travel up a paved mountain road then take the unpaved or snowpacked turnoff and keep going. A solid 8.7-inch ground clearance keeps the Subaru moving past these would-be obstacles. The Buick’s clearance is only 5.7 inches.
“With so little ground clearance and so much power, I just think Buick should market this wagon differently,” says Ferreira. “Subaru has a car more like the Regal TourX. It’s called the WRX.”
