Volkswagen of America, Inc. was named a winner in the 2019 AVT ACES awards, hosted by Autonomous Vehicle Technology (AVT), for its work on the MEB electric vehicle platform. AVT recognizes the most innovative technologies, products and services in the areas of autonomy, connectivity, electrification and mobility services.
“It is an honor to be recognized for the MEB platform,” said Matt Renna, Vice President of E-Mobility and Innovation at Volkswagen of America. “We at Volkswagen are committed to making the electric future of the auto industry a reality, and we believe the technology and scale of the MEB platform can do that.”
Volkswagen’s MEB platform, to be used in the new I.D. family of electric vehicles, was recognized for being an advanced technology that Volkswagen Group plans on bringing to market as part of its efforts to make mass-market, affordable electric vehicles starting in 2020. The I.D. family, which will draw inspiration from the I.D. VIZZION, I.D. CROZZ and the I.D. BUZZ concept vehicles, will have long range and visionary designs.
The MEB architecture will underpin millions of future Volkswagen Group EVs, using the scale of one of the largest automakers in the world to make technology affordable globally.
Primary elements of the MEB architecture, or the modular electric drive matrix, include an electric motor integrated into the rear axle with power electronics and a transmission, a high-voltage flat battery pack installed in the vehicle floor to save space, and auxiliary powertrains integrated into the front end of the vehicle. The MEB architecture will also enable assistance, comfort, infotainment, control and display systems to be integrated into vehicles across the board.
